A Comparative analysis of the common hot rolled steel grades

A Comparative analysis of the common hot rolled steel grades

In the context of the modern economy, it can be safely said that steel has one of the biggest roles to play in keeping the wheels turning. To the uninitiated, steel from steel companies in India can seem to be homogenous, but in reality, they can be availed of in several diverse steel material grades and types of steel materials.

Now, it is true that any exploration of the subject needs to venture to great depths, but for the sake of streamlining the overall process, we will be taking a look at the different grades of hot rolled steel that are produced by us, the type of steel that they are, and what are some of the potential applications where they can be used. So, let’s get started!

Cold forming and deep drawing

When it comes to types of steel material and steel grades in India, cold forming and deep drawing hot rolled steel can be obtained in EN 10111 DD11 to DD14 IS 1079 HR0 to HR4, ISH270C to ISH270E, JIS G 3131 SPHC/SPHD/SPHE ASTM A 1011 CS Type B grades. These steel grades are primarily used for constructing Automotive brackets, compressor shells, tillers, etc.

Re-rolling steel

As the name suggests, these are types of steel material that are further processed by passing them through rollers, making them well-suited for their relevant applications in the process. The common steel grades for this category are IS 11513 CRO - CR8, SAE1005 to SAE1010.

MC/HC steel

This is a kind of alloy steel that is popularly used in the building of precision automotive tubes, chains, sprockets, and others. The common steel grades in India for this type of steel are SAE J403 - SAE_1012 to 1080.

HSLA Steel

HSLA, or High Strength Low Alloy steel, is a common component that is used in building Steel Wheel Discs/Rims, Chassis – Long Members, Cross Members, and Automotive Components, thereby making this type of hot rolled coil a mainstay of the automotive industry in this day and age. The prominent steel grades that are used are JIS G 3113 SAPH310/370/400/440, JIS G 3134 SPFH-490/540/590, EN 10149-2 S315MC to S700MC IS 5986 ISH320LA – ISH750LA.

Stretch flange-able steel

This type of steel is used in the construction of control arms, rear twist beams, trailing arms, and more. The far as the grades from a steel company in India go, they are EN 10338_FB450 to FB590 / FB590 HHE, IS 5986 ISH590F

Dual Phase Steel

This type of steel is pretty limited in the way in which they are used, and in common parlance, most of its usage lies in the construction of steel wheel discs. Common steel grades are EN 10338_ DP600, IS 5986 ISH590Y.

Boron steel

A type of steel from a steel company in India, they are an alloy that features boron in the mix as well. Common applications include Plough Discs, Stabiliser bars, and Door Impact Beams, including the structural components of automobiles as well. Boron steel grades include EN 10083_28MnB5, 34MnB5, 20MnB5, 22MNB5, and 26MnB5, and they can be sourced as a hot rolled coil.

Line Pipes

As the name suggests, these are used in the construction of pipelines for the oil and gas industry in the country. Common grades for the same include API 5L GR B to X-80 for non-sour applications and API 5L GR BMS to X-65MS for sour applications.

Structural steel

This is by far the most commonly used types of steel material there are, and its primary usage is involved in heavy industries like bridge building, infrastructural development, building of wind towers, large-scale fabrication, etc. These can be obtained in a wide variety of hot rolled steel grades, namely EN 10025 S235/S275/S355 _ J2/JO/JR, IS 2062 E 250 to 350 A/BO/BR/C, E 450 A/BR ASTM A 1011 SS 33/ HSLA GR50 CL1 ASTM A 1018 HSLA GR60 CL1 / SS 33 ASTM A 283 GR C ASTM A 36 ASTM A 570 GR50 ASTM A 572 GR50 TYPE 1/ GR50 TYPE 2, DIN 17100 ST 37.2/44.3/52.3, JIS G 3101 SS400, JIS G 3106 SM 490 A

Shipbuilding steel

With ship fabrication as the main usage for this type of hot rolled steel, the relevant steel grades in India are ASTM A131 _ A, B, D, E, AH 32, AH 36, DH 32, DH 36, ABS class, DNV-GL class, IRS class, LR class, NKK class, and RINA class.

Corrosion-resistant steel

This type of steel is widely used in the construction of various railway components, including coach bodies, bogies, frames, undercarriage, etc. The grades for these forms of corrosion-resistant steel are IRSM 41, EN_10155_S355J2G1W / S355_JOWP, ASTM A588 Grade A/Grade B/ Grade K, BS 4360 WR 50A, JIS G 3125 SPAH.

Boilers and pressure vessel grades

Boilers and pressure vessels are designed to withstand high pressure and temperatures, and this is something that means that they need to have top-notch tolerances as well. This type of hot rolled steel is available in the following grades: ASTM A516 Gr 55/60/70, ASTM A515 Gr 60/70, A285 Gr C, ASTM A 285 Grade C, ASTM A 573 Grade 70, IS 2041 R220/R260

LPV Grades

The construction of gas cylinders and refrigerant cylinders requires specialized steel, and LPV grades are designed to fit that role. The common grades that are witnessed in this type of hot rolled coil are EN_10120_P245NB/P265NB, IS 6240, JIS 3116 SG255/SG295

Chequered plates

These are the kinds of plates that are commonly witnessed on industrial floors, FOBs, Heavy equipment platforms, and more! They are quite specialized in the role that they serve, and the relevant steel grades are IS 3502, ASTM_A_36, DIN_17100_ST 37.2, BS_EN_10025_S275_JR

In conclusion

Hot rolled steel grades are quite varied, and each has its own set of chemical and mechanical properties. AM/NS India is a leading manufacturer of hot rolled coil steel in the country. For more information about our offerings, get in touch with us today.
