Heavy Steel Plate Grades: Matching Material to Application

Heavy Steel Plate Grades: Matching Material to Application

Heavy steel plates are widely used in a number of industrial applications and projects in this day and age, and everything from airports to bridges, and more, has the involvement of hard steel plates in one way or the other.

As steel plates manufacturers, we offer specialized steel plates to cater to specific applications, and it must be borne in mind that each one of them brings a certain set of unique characteristics to the table. The types of steel materials used have a significant role to play in embellishing the various qualities of the heavy steel plates.

General engineering applications

When referring to general engineering applications that we execute, High tensile structural steel plates, Low and Intermediate Tensile Strength Carbon Steel Plates, and C-Mn-silicon steel for atmospheric temperatures service from a heavy steel plates company that’s usually used. Conventionally, some of the relevant grades of steel that we get to witness in this category are ASTM A36, IS 2062 E 250 BR/B0/C, ASTM A 573 Gr. 70, IS 2062 E 410 BR/B0/C, EN 10025-2 S355 J2, JR, J0 ASTM A572 Gr.50 Type I, II, III and others. Each grade brings a specific set of mechanical and chemical properties to the table, and to that end, the specifications must be carefully considered and discussed before procurement.

Shipbuilding

This is a heavily specialized process that involves types of steel material of various grades and specifications across its hulls, decks, and superstructures. Conventionally, normal-strength and high-strength steel plates for ships with grades of ABS, DNV, GL, NKK, IRS, BV ASTM A 131 AH36 & DH36, etc. are used for this specific role. Now, each build is different in the way that the operational requirements may vary, and to that end, finding the right type of steel material is essential.

API grades offshore structure and platforms

Offshore oil rigs, structures, and platforms, are faced with inclement weather and high operational loads on a regular basis, and the hard steel plate that’s used to construct them should be optimally suited to face these tough conditions as well. API 2W - 50 LS steel is usually the primary choice for these applications, and the chemical and physical properties that they exhibit are reasons for the same.

Boilers and Pressure vessels

Some of the common steel grades that are used in the construction of penstocks and related equipment are High strength alloy steels for fusion Welded pressure vessels and C-Mn-Si heat-treated steel for fusion Welded pressure vessels, with the relevant grades of hard steel plate being ASME/ASTM A 517 Gr. F and ASME/ASTM A 537 Cl. 2.
